A lot of people ask us whether there are certain situations that arise related to plumbing where they can just try to fix the problem themselves. The answer is that yes, there definitely are circumstances that can call for doing things by yourself. If your bath tub is clogged up, there’s probably no reason to call an emergency plumber and get someone out to your home.
However, I would say that the general rule should be that if you don’t know what you’re doing, and you can’t easily find the answer on Google, you definitely shouldn’t try to do the plumbing yourself. It’s best to leave the work to professionals if there is any doubt out there whatsoever.
The worst case scenario would be if you try to fix something by yourself and end up making the problem worse. Don’t be the person who does that.
There can also be a middle ground. If you have major flooding of your plumbing system, then you can and should shut off the valve that is the source of the water going into your house. You should also call a plumber to come out and fix the root cause of the issue.
There’s no set answer, but if you aren’t comfortable, it’s best to leave it up to the professionals.
