When Doing Your Own Plumbing Goes Horribly Wrong

There are definitely certain situations in which I would recommend you should just try to fix your plumbing issues by yourself.  If you have something as innocent as a clogged drain, then you can definitely just fix it yourself.  In other situations, however, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.  This video shows one of those times.  Enjoy.

Let this be a cautionary tale that you shouldn’t try to do too much by yourself.  DIY plumbing is something you should do with caution, unless it’s something really simple and innocent.

Prepare Yourself For The Worst

A lot of people have really terrible experiences when they face a major plumbing issue in their home or apartment.  For the most part, if those people had just done some basic preparations, they would have been able to avoid all the terror that comes with a plumbing disaster.  Here are some tips on how to make a plumbing issue not as bad as it could be.

Know How To Shut Off Your Water

If you have major leaking or flooding from a plumbing issue, it’s important to know exactly where the valve is that can shut off your water.  That will fix the situation temporarily and will bide you time for the plumber to come and fix the root cause.

Know Who Your Plumber Is

It’s good to know which plumber will be able to come out to your place immediately when you need them.  We are available at all hours, so we feel that we are always a good option and will always be reliable for you.  If not us, then make sure you can rely on whoever will be responsible for fixing the plumbing issue.

Arm Yourself With Basic Knowledge

There’s really a lot that you can learn from YouTube videos and other basic sources.  You can learn a lot about basic plumbing just by doing some searching on the Internet.  It may not seem like the most fun hobby to have, but if you can arm yourself with general plumbing knowledge, then maybe you can prevent a plumbing disaster from happening, or at least you’ll be able to react to it more quickly.  We’re of course pretty biased, but I don’t see any downside from equipping yourself with general plumbing knowledge.

That’s really about it.  Some plumbing issues are inevitable, but you can definitely prevent some from happening and otherwise know how to react optimally when the situations do arise.

Fixing A Blocked Up Sink

As I’ve mentioned before, there are a lot of plumbing issues that will arise where you just don’t need to call a plumber.  Generally, unless you have a big or pressing issue, you can just google what the issue and find a pretty good solution that you can just carry out yourself.  Fixing a bathroom or kitchen sink that has gotten blocked up isn’t the most complex situation that could arise.  This video will go through some basic steps on how you can fix the issue yourself.  Give it a look.

I hope this video was pretty informative.  You can always just use Drano or some other type of drain cleaner.  This video presents alternatives for you as well.

When Your Shower Drain Gets Clogged

This will happen to you at some point no matter where you are living.  Unless you are completely hairless, your shower drain will slowly get clogged.  Hair naturally accumulates over time, and if you don’t do anything to combat it, you are going to be faced with a clogged shower drain.  What to do about it, you ask?  Well, there’s any number of ways to fix it.  You could just go to the local CVS and get some Drano.  That usually will do the trick, although sometimes it might take multiple tries before you can get everything completely cleared up.  Check out this video for my advice.

There’s more than one way to skin this cat.  It shouldn’t be a situation where you have to call a plumber to your house.  A lot of plumbing can actually be done by yourself, if you know what you are doing.  A clogged shower drain is no exception.

A Toilet That Doesn’t Flush

Not every plumbing situation that arises requires a plumber to come out to see you.  In fact, a situation like when your toilet doesn’t flush is a perfect example of a scenario where you can simply go onto YouTube and find out what the answer is and just try to fix the situation yourself.  In that case, this video is a good primer for what to do if your toilet doesn’t flush.  Check it out.

As you can see, it’s not the most difficult situation in the world to try to fix a toilet that doesn’t flush.  Sometimes you can be your own plumber quite effectively.

We Are Open On Weekends

A lot of people have asked us whether we are open on weekends.  When we say that we are available 24 hours a day, that goes whether it’s during the week or on a Sunday.  We wanted to be available truly at all times.  Plumbing disasters don’t wait for the weekend to be over.  Disasters don’t care if it’s 4 in the morning on a Saturday.  You don’t have a lot of control over when something might go wrong in your household.  We understand that quite well, so we wanted to make ourselves available at all times.

The next logical question is, don’t you have families that you want to see?  Well, of course we do.  We just have to work extra hard to make things work.  We have a team of plumbers, so we always run in shifts.  It’s not like every single plumber is on call at all times.  That would be tough to make work.  We have a good system and schedule down and so far it has worked out pretty well.

So, to answer your question, we are open on Saturday or Sunday.  If you run into an emergency situation, or you just need to have someone come out on the weekend because you are busy during the week, then don’t worry, we’ll be available to come out whenever you need us.

Fixing A Leaky Faucet

Do you know what to do when there is a leaky faucet?  There’s nothing more annoying than going to the bathroom to hear that constant dripping sound that seems interminable.  It’s a good idea to arm yourself with the knowledge of how to fix such a situation before it ever arises.  This video goes into detail how to do exactly that.

It’s better sometimes to arm yourself with the knowledge to do things on your own, rather than have to wait and rely on a plumber.  A dripping faucet is probably one of those situations where it’s good to know how to fix things on your own.  Hopefully this video has helped you identify how to deal with that exact situation.

What To Do If Your Toilet Overflows

If your toilet overflows, you might not want to wait a whole bunch of time before you can actually get one of us plumbers out to your place.  At the very least, you want there to be some sort of stop gap measure before a plumber arrives and really fixes the root of the problem.  This video describes what to do in the case of toilet overflow.  I think it’s a good quick and dirty primer on the topic.

As you can see, it’s very important to know how to shut off the water.  There should be a valve behind the toilet that can quickly do the job.  If you live in an older home, then you might have to find another place to shut off the water.  Shutting off the water is the temporary solution.  You will still have to call a plumber to analyze what went wrong and how you can prevent such a thing from happening going forward.

Basic DIY Plumbing Advice

If you run into any emergency or just normal plumbing situation, there is some basic advice that you should follow.  This video will highlight 3 quick tips for things that you should understand in any plumbing situation.

You should know how water comes into your building.  You’ll eventually see a copper pipe with a valve.  You want to always know where that is in case you run into an emergency.  If you have water pouring all over the place in your house, it’s important to locate this valve so you can shut it off.  Hopefully this video was fairly helpful in describing this.

That Nightmare Scenario

Imagine the following.  You are asleep for a few hours but then you wake up in the middle of the night.  You grab a snack and then head to the bathroom.  When you head into the bathroom, you notice that something isn’t right.  You hear a dripping sound, so you turn all the lights on.  It turns out that your faucet is leaking quite forcefully all over the floor.  No matter what you try to do you can’t get the leak to stop.  After several frustrating minutes of trying to remedy the situation, you just can’t fix the sink.  The only logical thing to do at this point is to call a plumber.

You frantically go to your computer because you need a plumber to get out to your place as soon as possible.  You go onto Google and try to find a plumber.  You call the first plumber you find but no one actually answers the phone.  After all, it is the middle of the night, so it’s not normal business hours.  You try a second plumber, but they don’t answer the phone either.  You try a third and then a fourth and still no answer.  How frustrating.

That is an experience that has been had by to many people.  That exact experience is why we create Best 24 Hour Plumbing.  We want to be the one plumber who picks up the phone and is actually able to come out to service your call, no matter when it is needed.  Avoid that nightmare scenario and give us a call instead when you need a plumber fast.
